The 7th commandment that God handed down to Moses was "You shall not commit adultery."Even before the time of Moses adultery was considered a very grave sin. In Genesis 20:3 the bible tells us that "You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman."Marriage is a relationship that God has established, with the goal of uniting a couple into one flesh. There are also other reasons why adultery is frowned upon. In ancient times society was patriarchal and men did not want to be tricked into taking responsibility for the child of another man. The bible does not apply only to women though, both sexes are supposed to remain faithful and committed to their marriage. Genesis 2:24 tells us that "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."

Another biblical passage that shows the shame of adultery is Proverbs 6: -6:35. "He who commits adultery is devoid of sense; only one who would destroy himself does such a thing. He will meet with disease and disgrace; his reproach will never be expunged. The fury of the husband will be passionate; he will show no pity on his day of vengeance. He will not have regard for any ransom; he will refuse your bribe, however great." Any person who commits adultery is guilty of interfering with a relationship that God has created, and they have turned their back on the Lord. There is no conflict when it comes to adultery, this is one of the worst sins imaginable short of murder and that is why God included it into the 10 commandments.
