In many schools around the country abstinence is the only sex education offered, but this is not realistic. Abstinence is an admirable goal but we must be careful that we do not travel back to the past when women were punished for premarital sex while the male half had no shame or responsibility for their role. Unwed parents are becoming common and few teens wait until marriage before having sex. Using an abstinence only sex education model is not ideal because of what the statistics show, and many teens will fall through the cracks and end up pregnant. Promoting abstinence is a great goal but realistic expectations and various approaches must be used in order to address the educational needs of all students in the population.
