The word majority refers to something that involves more than 50% of the group, or that involves more in the subset than any other subset of the group has. Majority quotes show that this can be a set of people, places, things, or other subsets. During an election if Republicans gain 40% of the vote while Democrats and Independents each have 30% of the vote then the Republicans have a majority even though they do not make up 51% of the voting group, because they have the highest amount out of all the voting groups available. In Congress a majority of votes must be achieved before a law can be passed or other legislative actions are taken. Some contests are won when a majority of the people voting pick one group over the others.
